The A.E. Schmidt Company was established in 1914, dedicated to serving the topsoil needs of the film studios - mainly, color matched soils for movie sets and planting soils for studio greensmen. Over the years we branched out and began to develop new soil products for both horticultural and sporting field uses. We developed baseball infield soils, mound clays, warning track mixes, running track mixes, horse arena mixtures and several other products for sporting needs. As the City of Los Angeles grew, so did the demand for planting mixes for the homeowners and nurserymen. A.E. Schmidt designed various “planter mixes” to satisfy this demand. We are currently the industry leader in manufacture and sales of specialty soils. We are also the vendor of choice for color and texture matching of earth materials for the film making industry In short we know the soil market because we developed it. Nearly everyone involved in horticulture or sporting fields in the Los Angeles area knows of the A.E. Schmidt Company and it’s reputation.
